Bloody Murder

The headline of today’s Trinidad Express reads “Tortured”. It seems like the murders are getting more gruesome by the day, if it isn’t one then its another or another. It’s not only that the respect for human life is gone, but also the respect for the law. The criminals know that they can do their evil acts and get away with it.

So what do we do now. The fact is, the police service is impotent, and the government does not believe that crime is an issue to be dealt with. In fact, the PNM did not see this fit to address during the elections, far less that after winning the thing. The mere fact that they brought back Martin Joseph is testament to that.

“All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.”

Edmund Burke

But I will admit that crime is not just a governmental issue… it is a societal one and we really need to look at ourselves and wonder what can we do. It is frightening I know, because I myself have seen someone robbed, and while I could not have done anything at the time (since I really didn’t know what was happening), I could have pursued, but I will admit I was afraid, and also no one else was looking like they were going to help anyway. But we need to get over this fear and fight the evil that stalks the land… for the sake of the nation and for our families.

The show must go on

With the tragic events that have occurred over the weekend, one can imagine the sombre atmosphere at the office. Family members that came down for Jason’s funeral, as well as Patrick’s mum and dad, also made a stop at the office.

However, through sadness, the fact remains that the show must go on. While succession planning is a usual thing in planning projects, no one expects that something like this would happen. So far I am happy to see that the team has been putting an extra effort in trying to fill the gaps that are left.

I am also in that category, making that effort to keep working, but for the simple reason, it distracts me. Distracts me from the sorrow that I feel and that thought of the horrific circumstances of it all. For the most part it works, but it is still hard to believe it all.

After all this, I am going to make an effort to really enjoy life and to feel alive. Patrick has inspired me, both in life and even in death.

You can check out his pictures on his website.

In memory of…

It’s a really sad time right now. A car crash early Saturday morning claimed two lives, one of whom was a good friend of mine. A third person who survived the crash died Saturday night at the hospital.

Patrick Zimmer and Maggie Howard died in the car crash, while Jason Cardenas survived only to succumb to his injuries later. They were all British citizens.

I worked with both Patrick and Jason at Fujitsu Transaction Solutions. Both were really great people, but I worked much closer to Patrick. Maggie was the wife of Ian Howard, who also worked at Fujitsu.

Patrick and I both started Fujitsu at about the same time; he started a week after I did. I did not get to know him much until after we started working together on a project for the past month and a half.

I can say that working with Patrick was a real pleasure. He was a really fun and likable guy. He loved one of my greatest loves – nature; probably more than I did.

I am really sorry that I was not able to spend more time with him. To think about the times he asked if I wouldn’t like to go out for drinks or to take a little hike that I said no to. He will be missed.

My prayers go out to the family, to Ian and his son, and especially to Miki, Patrick’s wife.

My New Job

Well it’s going into the fourth week in my new job. For those who don’t know, I’ve gone back to the IT service industry as a Solutions Architect (my old job was as a Network Manager for the company). Honestly, I still not know what a Solution Architect is really supposed to do, but right now I am just going with the flow; I should be able to figure it out soon I hope.

So anyway, it is going okay for now, just need to do a lot of certification exams since I let that lapse quite some time ago. So far I redid my CCNA and got 100%, which made me felt good since I though I would be quite rusty.

As for our customers, it’s been more government agencies, which in my opinion sucks ass. I won’t say much else, but just know that I don’t like them much.
Besides that, the place is good. It has been much less stressful than at my old company… much much less stressful.

Let’s see how everything progresses.

Season’s Greetings

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2007.

Hopefully this New Year will bring many better tidings that the one past.

The murder rate might be less than last years, but over the pass couple of days there has been a few killings so let’s see how it turns out.

Inflation also went down like by .5 percent to 9.8 percent but that is still a hell of a lot. I have no investments that is making that much interest, so at the moment I am making a loss on it all.

So let’s see what the New Year holds. It’s an election year, so hope is alive that changes would take place, albeit just a little.
